Reading on Repeat with Kids: Up the Mountain Path by Marianne Dubuc
Because once is not enough!
This RoR pick, Up the Mountain Path by Marianne Dubuc, was a baby gift three years ago. I had never heard of it before so at first I didn’t know if it would get much reading (now I love her books and illustrations). We’ve been picking this heartwarming book up more and more, especially as the snow melts and we’re going on bigger hikes around our neighbourhood.
Up the Mountain Path by Marianne Dubuc
This little gem is about friendship, time passing, and exploring the outdoors. Every Sunday Mrs. Badger, a naturalist, hikes the same trail by her house to Sugarloaf Peak. She meets a cat named Lulu that tags along and soon they become great friends. Mrs. Badger greets animals, finds treasures, and shares her knowledge of the land with Lulu. Lulu quickly grows to love the trail, and makes it apart of her Sunday tradition.
It’s a lovely story of friendship and sharing our special places with others so they can enjoy them for generations to come. There was a low-key heartbreaking moment near the end when Mrs. Badger no longer had the strength to climb to the peak and Lulu continues the tradition on her own.
Also the page on the specific qualities for a perfect hiking stick was of particular interest to our toddler, who is adamant he finds a walking stick when we’re out hiking.
If you have a little one that likes to explore the outdoors, this one would be great to read this spring and summer!
- Happy reading!
